Healthy teeth and gums are important to your overall health. With links to heart disease, diabetes, infertility and a host of other risks, you can’t afford to get gum disease; the time and investment of treating periodontal infections and treatment can be minimized with the right preventive care.
Dunwoody Family & Cosmetic Dentistry wants to help you keep your natural teeth for life. Here are three ways you can keep your smile healthy and free of periodontitis.
Brush Correctly: Use a soft bristled brush and an ADA approved toothpaste. Brush all sides- fronts, backs, and chewing surfaces for a full two minutes. Try angling the brush at 45 degrees toward the gumlines for the most effective clean. Twice a day is the healthiest way, more if you have braces!
Floss Daily: Foods that stick under your gums are irritating, but bacteria love them! They turn into plaque and tartar, producing inflammation and causing gum disease. Use a long enough piece of floss that you can manipulate, and slide it between each pair of teeth and wrap it around one at a time, gently wiping under the gums. If your gums are bleeding, it’s a sign of infection.
Book Regular Dental Cleanings: An annual dental cleaning is so 1983! Experts recommend that healthy patients have their teeth cleaned and examined twice a year. We’ll take x-rays to screen for bone loss (and cavities) and perform a periodontal exam to check your gum health. We even perform an oral cancer screening! If there is any treatment necessary, we can make a plan to get your teeth healthy again.
