Pain After a Root Canal

Root Canal Initial Recovery Period

Root canal therapy is a very involved process, so experiencing mild tenderness and sensitivity for a few days after having endodontic treatment is normal. Taking over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen can relieve any discomfort. Also, your tooth may feel sore when you bite down on it. As the inflammation goes down over the next few days, it’s best if you chew with the other side of your mouth. Initial soreness can also come from tender gum tissue around the tooth. To alleviate this issue, you can brush the area lightly and rinse with warm salt water frequently.

Recurring Pain Long After Root Canal Treatment

In some instances, a person may start to experience pain on a tooth that they had treated with a root canal years ago. This is typically a sign that there’s still live nerve tissue within the tooth, and it’s infected. Solving this problem can usually be completed by retreating the tooth. On occasion, we’ll refer you to an Endodontist (root canal specialist) who can look at your tooth under a microscope to diagnose and treat it further.
