Oral Cancer Screening
Cancer of any form can jeopardize your health and even become deadly. Catching the disease early offers the best hope for treatment and recovery. The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates over 49,000 cases of oral cancer are detected each year in the U.S., with over 9,000 deaths occurring annually. As part of our general dentistry services at Dunwoody Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we care about your health and offer oral cancer screenings to help detect the early signs of this deadly disease.
Oral cancer can occur at any age and affects both genders and different ethnic groups. The tumors or lesions are often found in the soft tissues in the mouth, including the tongue, lips, gums and throat. Unfortunately, the visible signs are often not present until the later stages, which can make the cancer more difficult to successfully treat. However, oral cancer screenings can identify early signs that are not visible from casual observation but can be detected using specialized equipment.
Identify Mouth Cancer Early
Like most cancers, mouth or oral cancers are most treatable in the early stages. During your regular dental exams, our dentist can perform an oral cancer screening to check for any signs of irregularities in the mouth tissues. The screening only takes a few minutes and is not painful. The dentist will visually check for any abnormalities like sores, spots or lumps that could be early signs of cancer, as well as use oral equipment that can detect changes in the tissues of the mouth that cannot be seen by the naked eye.
