TMJ & TMD Treatment
Many people suffer from temporomandibular joint disorders, referred to as TMJ or TMD. This condition involves the mandibular, or jaw, joint and the surrounding muscles and tissue. Stress and other factors can cause the jaw joint to become dysfunctional or painful. However, there are treatment options available to reduce the pressure on this joint and offer relief for the patient. At Dunwoody Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we accurately diagnose TMJ/TMD and find the root of the problem to offer treatment solutions.
The symptoms of TMD can vary greatly from person to person. Pain in the jaw or facial region is very common, as is a popping or clicking sound when opening/closing the jaw. The symptoms are not always localized – other people may have headaches, earaches, neck pain and other issues. These are often misdiagnosed if there are not any localized symptoms to point to a temporomandibular joint problem.
Jaw Pain, Facial Pain Relief!
To relieve TMJ pain and symptoms, our dentist will explore what may be causing the pressure on your temporomandibular joint. It is often an oral issue that can be corrected to help minimize the stress on the jaw joint. Misalignment of teeth or jaw can be one possible cause; sometimes losing teeth can change your bite configuration. Other possible problems can be teeth grinding, jaw clenching or bruxism; these can cause extra pressure on the jaw and damage the teeth.
Once our dentist identifies some contributing causes to the TMJ, a treatment plan can be formed. This may include dental or orthodontic treatments to help lessen stress on the jaw joint. A nightguard is often recommended to combat nocturnal teeth grinding or jaw clenching. With treatment, the symptoms and pain can dissipate while protecting the jaw from further damage.
